Recipient profiles: Betsy Hackley
A long-time water sports enthusiast, Betsy Hackley earned her NAUI Open Water I certification in 1998. Following her initial introduction to the sport of SCUBA diving, she has been enthusiastic in learning as much as possible about anything, and everything, relating to the ocean. Since 1998, she continued her dive training and has earned her advanced open water, SCUBA Rescue Diver, Nitrox, and NAUI Master Diver certifications.Her love of the marine environment led Betsy to the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. She is currently a sophomore majoring in marine safety and environmental protection. At the Academy, Betsy holds the position of Treasurer for the Student Government Association; she is a member of the Honor Board and, of course, the SCUBA club. Outside of school, Betsy teaches swim lessons, serves as the Nature Director at a day camp, and volunteers with the Boston Sea Rovers. She is looking forward to working with The Cambrian Foundation this winter and expanding her knowledge of the underwater world. John MacLean Boswell, Jr.
John "Boz" Boswell is member of the Class of 2008 at Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia. He is working on a major in Biology as well as serving as a Resident Advisor and a member of the Society of '91. John has participated with the Cambrian Foundation on five expeditions, including the SS Commodore Projects in 2002 and 2003, and Sistema Camilo (Akumal, Mexico) in 2004 and 2005. He received the Legare R. Hole III Memorial Scholarship in 2005. John enjoys SCUBA diving, herpetology, and having a good time.
Woodrow Marks Dunkum
Woody Dunkum is one of three recipients of the 2005 Legare R. Hole, III, Memorial Scholarship. Woody is from Dillwyn, Virginia, and is a 2004 graduate of Fuqua School in Farmville, Virginia, where he was an active member of the Envirothon team. A participant on five expeditions, Woody’s leadership skills, knowledge of aquatic ecology, and ability to teach young people in the field are unmatched. He is currently studying heavy equipment operations at Southside Community College in Keysville, Virginia. Woody is a certified scuba diver.
Joshua C. Owen
Josh Owen, a native of Prospect, VA, is the first recipient of the Legare R. Hole, III, Memorial Scholarship awarded by the Cambrian Foundation. He spent two weeks during the summers of 2004 and 2005 in Orlando, Florida, working on the Central Florida Karst Project. In addition, Josh has participated on four other Cambrian Foundation expeditions – both as a student and as a staff member. He will graduate in 2007 from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia, with a degree in communications. His major emphasis is electronic media, and he is also minoring in Spanish. Josh is a certified open water diver.
